There was nothing but stillness, a tension that climaxed as a sudden cry pierced the air - a shriek as life forced its way from between a woman's thighs. Their voices broke out over the silence, hushing the cry, the sounds of actions, of life. The chattering grew and grew, a chorus of forced quiet, so excited - frightened. Their breath commingled together; hot puffs of smoke in the frigid air, obscuring their eyes, thoughts as ineffable as Death itself. Even muted, hope sparked so deep in the darkness of their irises, a growing light in the dark that they imagined their hearts swelling to fill their chest to bursting. Quickly they moved - hands cradled the young babe, wrapped it in blankets, kept it warm against the chill.
Its afterbirth lay vomited onto the craggy rock as they scuttled off to the side, leaving it to Nexa: that terrible demon-child they thought crouched in the darkness, watching them, waiting for her feast to begin. But that was just the beginning - their breath grew faster as they prayed to their false God, pouring out their faith, their want and desires into each stressed syllable. Please, please. Each touch of their fingers worshiped the child's life, stroking down with such tender reverence: skull, face, neck, hands and toes.
Be a girl! They prayed.
Looking down at the quiet child, bundled up in the little scraps they had been able to spare, adoration seemed palpable, a touch as living as their own hands. Fingers peeling down the cloth, the small flaccid phallus of the child gave testament to his sex; crestfallen expressions mirrored each other but only held a pale imitation to the destruction of their hearts. Another boy. Another child to lose to the darkness. The boy seemed bold and beautiful. He yawned and exposed his tiny tongue, the purple-red of his gums. His skin was inked with Mercury; his eyes the deep-set green of dark emeralds - the color of the Gods!
Weeping, they took the child from its mother's arms, her cries of protestation smothered by thick, muscled hands as she struggled feebly against the strength of two, five, ten others. The weight of a family. She bucked and twisted, cried and gagged as they unwrapped the babe and with one final, adoring look, dropped him down into the abysmal dark to be eaten by Adamis - Dark Overlord of Death.
The wail that erupted from the child's lungs was easily cut off as he bounced from one rock to the next, silenced and dead far before he fell out of sight and was enveloped by shadows. His mother, weak from the terror that sang so loud in her veins, collapsed, grief carving lines in her face. Carried away, no one but the demons knew of their passing as they faded into anonymity.// ___ //
