come hell or high water. High Water is a small city along the shore of Lake Michigan. Unknown to it's human inhabitants, High Water is home to several supernatural species. The city has the highest rate of vampires, witches and shapeshifters than any other city in the United States.
Laws have been set up by supernatural elders to keep the vampires, witches and shifters under wraps. For example, no human is ever to find out about the supernatural. If one is ever to know, all people involved in the incident will be executed. Vampires are not allowed to remain in one place for more than ten years - in order to keep up appearances. Another rule, one of the big ones, is never to fall in love with a human.
hell in a handbasket. No one's sure when the whole concept of 'soulmates' began, but everyone's starting to fear it. You see, soulmate magic doesn't follow any rules. And the trouble is that supernatural culture doesn’t allow species to intermarry. It’s unnatural, dirty. If, for instance, a shifter and a witch were to fall in love, they would be torn apart by their families.
But soulmate magic doesn't recognize different species, or cultures, or laws. Couples of difference species have needed to hide their relationships from the public, from their families. And supernatural beings are falling in love with humans and just unable to escape the bond they feel.
high water rising. It all seems very romantic, right? Falling in love with someone, no matter who they are, and knowing that it will last for as long as you both live? Wrong. What happens when your soulmate was already married before they met you? Or if a witch fell in love with a shapeshifter and their families were hell bent on breaking them apart?
Or, worst of all, if you fell in love with a human? Supernatural elders have been known to kill their fellow witches, vampires and shifters for being with a human. What if your soulmate was a human and you couldn't bear to stay away from them?
Your two choices are pain and death, or an excruciating existence without the most important person of your life.
